“A Tribute Letter on Behalf of MLK Jr. Day 2012: I Am LIVING My Dream(s)!”

*SPECIAL NOTE* I started this piece on the day we commemorated MLK Jr.’s Birthday this year (January 16, 2012), but my precious cat Fuzzy Wuzzy ended up getting deathly ill around this same time and I refocused all my motherly instincts on my precious pet who at that time I had for 17 years. Sadly, my precious Fuzz-Wuzz passed on January 25, 2012–R.I.P. So it has taken me a little time to recollect my thoughts and finish the piece. Thank you for understanding. You will notice it is written as though TODAY is January 16, 2012 but now you know it was intended for publication on that date not  a month later but now you also know why the delay. It is African American History Month so I felt it was still befitting to post this.  Also, who better to illuminate THAN Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on THIS particular website that focuses on DREAMING BIG IN THE LORD AND LIVING OUT THOSE SAME BIG DREAMS WITH RECKLESS ABANDON!  His entire adult life was committed to that very cause! So it is with honor that I present these thoughts to you.  Nonetheless, this piece was written deep from within my heart and soul and MUST go forth into cyberworld amen.

Subtitle: “I Use My LIFE to Honor God through Christ…and to Honor Those Who Have Gone Before Me Who Followed His Teaching As Well.”

       I’ve had the entire day off as many of you have and do you know how I spent it? Well, yes it was relaxing not to have to commute to the two schools I teach at, or to HUSTLE to teach the 103 precious young people I have the privilege of educating daily. Yet, I chose to spend this day of SERVICE in honor of MLK, Jr.’s Life by continuing to do what I do on my work days: EDUCATING URBAN YOUTH so that they can have the same strong educational foundation that I have had and that Martin Luther King, Jr. had.

     I did this by grading essay tests for the past 4 hours and am just NOW taking a breather because it is QUITE time consuming (mind you it took me 4 hours to read, edit/revise, score, attach documentation to help my students prepare for the upcoming NJASK 8 exam) to grade just 11 essay tests—YES! I said 11…no I did not take hardly any breaks other than feeding my cat LOL! Otherwise, I plugged away, carefully marking the essays and offering helpful comments of correction or celebration of a job well done.  I don’t mind, truly I don’t. (However, I have 10 more essays and I CLAIM it will take me half as long LORD PLEASE! lol!)

       I…AM…A…TEACHER. It’s in my blood, it’s in my DNA, it’s part of my SPIRIT from God that lives inside of me.  Sure I would’ve loved to lounge around lazily all day but that is not what I CHOSE to do. I waited to grade them just so that the entire day I could remember that my life’s main occupation is that of TEACHER—MENTOR. I come alive in a classroom setting! It is there that I get to teach the same things that Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. taught nationally and internationally…the only difference is I currently do so via a microcosm and that being a city and then within two schools in the same city/school district, which happens to be an urban metropolis and that of my specific choosing; but eventually and sooner than later, I will be touching lives internationally as well through my DREAMGirl HIMpowerment Empire…that is my ultimate dream, alongside being a founder of an ACADEMY OF EAGLE EXCELLENCE in the heart of an inner city, one which will be a stellar example of superb urban education and replicated throughout the U.S…these dreams keep my blood pumping daily through my veins. These dreams keep me motivated when “other forces” seek to destroy my hopes and my vision…these dreams that God has impregnated inside of me grow through diligent prayer, fasting, worship, and praise of my almighty Father God through His son and my savior Jesus Christ…without the Lord, my dreams surely would die. The greatest news I share with YOU today (and myself) is that BECAUSE OF CHRIST we already know we have the VICTORY over anyone or anything who/that tries to steal or kill or destroy our dreams and visions that God has ordained for us, halleluia!

     Suffice it to say that even after the unrelenting passionate efforts of beloved civil rights leader, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr: Education is STILL quite unequal and is still based on socioeconomics unfortunately. I won’t delve into a diatribe here  nor am I trying to turn this blog post into a debate in any form or fashion. I simply am stating my observations based on my peaceful/rural upbringing (wonderful upbringing emotionally, educationally, physically, mentally, and spiritual) which I have compared it to what I have seen all across the country during my almost 2 decades as an urban education policy researcher and advocate; and, I am basing this assertion on my observations of the world around me (via the news, readings, friends’ stories, etc).

       Let’s just say I am doing everything in my solo power to teach my students not just how to proficiently read and write as their Language Arts Literacy Instructor; I moreso am modeling and teaching them how to LOVE others even when they are being unlovable (i.e. many times my students do things that make teaching impossible or extremely challenging at best, YET we—ALL TEACHERS—must continue to come into our classrooms DAILY and OVERCOME such distractions…we have no other choice)—MLK Jr. surely taught us to love others despite our differences or disagreements or disappointments or mistreatments and THAT is what I do and have done for the past 17 years of my teaching career. 

       I tell my students daily how much I celebrate and am proud of even the smallest improvements or accomplishments they make. I compliment them and I use their first name when they enter the room or when I am addressing them (mind you I have 103 students and yes I know ALL of their names and I address every single one every single day when they enter and when they leave my classroom). My friends and family are amazed by this and I must say it is something I am proud of myself that I have been doing for literally 17 years of educating young people and adults (4 1/2 of those years were spent as a Teacher Trainer).

       Secondly, I model and teach my students about PEACE, just like the illustrious MLK Jr. did. New Jersey passed an Anti-Bullying Law in July 2011 and this has affected our schools tremendously. The simple “joke” or “teasing” is now punishable by law if the recipient considers the comment a type of bullying tactic or intimidating (and this includes sexual innuendos which are common at the age I teach (7^th and 8^th grade) especially nowadays in the age of indiscretions via Reality Shows, graphic music videos, and the like.  So, my challenge of keeping a PEACEFUL classroom setting has been tumultuous on almost a DAILY level since this new school year started 5 months ago because kids are still doing the things they’ve done for years that went under the radar but the difference now is IT TRULY WILL GET THEM IN A LOT OF LEGAL TROUBLE. 

     So, my task daily is to make sure that neither I nor my students speak or act in a way that is threatening, intimidating, insulting (racially, culturally, religiously, or sexually) or bullying in any manner big or small. This is NO easy feat but with GOD’S help I have been able to KEEP THE PEACE amongst my students to the best of my ability. Long gone are the innocent days of joking around in class with no risk of punishment by the school or district or legal actions by a student’s parents if you are the student who is teasing another student. NOW I teach my students that NOT teasing is the best way to go even if they feel it is INNOCENT FUN THROUGH JOKING AROUND; unfortunately that term is dangerous in NJ schools in 2012. 

     Lastly, but not least, I teach my students the JOY OF LEARNING, which I FULLY POSSESS and which  MLK, Jr. excellently exemplified to the utmost degree throughout his entire short-lived life. He was an INCREDIBLE orator and his vocabulary STILL has the most learned people (including myself LOL) scrambling for a dictionary to figure out the context of his words.  He was gifted and well versed in speech, writing, reading, and I am sure many other subject areas. Thus I model and instill the love of reading, w

     I often use his quotes to inspire my students, not just in January but all school year long because he was just THAT inspirational. I aspire to have a wide vocabulary arsenal such as that of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. not to showboat or impress any particular people, but to be a beacon of light and educational excellence for those precious minds I help mold and shape daily: those of my students.

       Conclusively, I show my students this essay in February ironically, not when they may expect something like this which is January (MLK’s Bday Month). I have MANY reasons for choosing to show them this essay in FEBRUARY: in honor of a STELLAR African American man and in honor of my own proud heritage to commemorate African American History Month; in honor of the month of LOVE=FEBRUARY: My love for God infiltrates my whole being and greatly affects how I present myself to those around me; in honor of the love I have for the legacy of a great man of God (MOG), Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in whose steps I proudly follow as an anointed Master Teacher (one LED by the MASTER: God)…a teacher whose primary subject is English/Language Arts Literacy, but whose synonymous subjects happen to be LOVE, PEACE, AND JOY and I impart all of these graciously, carefully, purposely, and lovingly upon those who sit in the desks/chairs before me every school day from now until the Lord calls me home because that is when I plan on stopping.

 My GRATITUDE & DEDICATIONS:

       Thank you Rev. Dr. MLK, Jr. Your legacy of love, peace, justice, and joy of learning lives on through me and through the minds and hearts and spirits of the young people whose lives I have touched in the past and whose minds and hearts and spirits I impact even now.

Saunders, second, for their untiring unending and impenetrably unyielding and solid support, Christian upbringing, and love towards me and my sister Heather T. Unless we have recently exchanged marital vows, I am sorry to inform you,

you are NOT enough.

It takes more than our chemistry for you to blend with me,

Why?

Because my Sugar Cookies/Special Spices Aren’t FREE!

Jesus has reminded me “You are fearfully and wonderfully made,

And ONLY the one who commits to loving you for life deserves to fully

partake!

I paid a great price for your life,

So shall the man who wishes to have you as his or who you FIND as

your WIFE!”

Brothers, your special spices have been mixed just right, and surely they

aren’t worth mixing with unrefined sugar in just one night!

…Sisters, your sugar cookies aren’t free, and that also applies also  to me!

It’s quite simple indeed:

If the man God has set aside for you wants to devour your sweet sugar cookie love,

Then HIS WIFE FOR LIFE he must MAKE SURE you become.

And if the woman God has set aside for you, gentlemen, wants to mix her sugar

 with your special spices, make sure you first commit to covenant by walking

her down that aisle!

Did the title get your FULL attention or WHAT? LOL!!! Yes, I love cutting to the chase when it comes to how we are living this blessing called LIFE from Father God. I am in the BUSINESS of excavating and cultivating people’s dream lives, and since time is of the essence, I for one do not have TIME to tippy-toe around the big issues facing us as a society as a WHOLE. One such issue I have observed for decades that is progressively getting worse by the MILLISECOND is society’s complacence in JUST GETTING BY in life or JUST GETTING OVER or BARELY MAKING IT. Do these phrases sound oh-too-familiar? Well, that is because oftentimes, when we ask others around us “Hey girl how are things going?” or “Hey bruh, what’s goin’ on?” we may hear cookie cutter responses such as: “Oh I’m alright just tryin to make it you know. I can’t complain” or “Man listen I’m just makin it do what it do you know” or a series of similar commentaries. The basic premise behind ALL such comments is simply this: Many people DESIRE a more fulfilling and rich/succulent life of their dreams; however, they allow the valley experiences (low times), negative influences (some family or friends who only speak negative into and around them), and society’s false promises of quick riches and fast/false affection to negate and dampen those dream life desires. This is not a condemnation or judgement, rather it is a LONG STANDING observation that I have taken the time to document and closely pay attention to over the past 20+ years, not a short amount of time by any stretch of the imagination. I have observed these dreary cycle that many people succumb to from the time I was in high school, through college (which was the onset of the internet age, the mid 1990′s), through my climb in my career as a teacher and subsequently through my time in graduate school during my late twenties in 2000-2001. This dry sense of simply existing has become increasingly prevalant in not just adults but sadly has now leaked down into the hearts and souls of our precious youth (I namely address preteens through mature young adults in my empowerment business: ages twelve through late forties). I have seen it day in and day out as a middle school and then a high school teacher: our youth, especially in the inner cities, are slowly dying inside because they have NO VISION for their future. The word of the Lord clearly states in Proverbs 29:18: “Where there is NO VISION, the PEOPLE PERISH.” It just hit me analogically that if we are referring to defacation (hence the title of this article) aka “poop”, we know that after one removes WASTE from the body, he or she FLUSHES that DIRTY WASTE down a TOILET (well more times than not smiles). The same refers to lives that “poop”: they are stinky, they sometimes defile those closest to them, and truly they are a waste of one’s precious life and time on this Earth. On the contrary, lives that “pop” (think of a precious flower if you are a female or a strong tree if you are a male): have a delectable aroma, spread beauty to those closest to them, and most definitely are a wonderful exemplar of one’s unique and special life on this planet. Let’s explore these 3 comparisions of lives that POP vs lives that POOP and examine exactly why it blesses God’s heart when our lives POP with his peace, love, and joy thus creating the dream lives that HE has predestined for us to have from the beginning of time through His son Jesus Christ: “The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life” (John 10:10 NLT). There are also some action steps that you will be able to take hold of TODAY if you are serious about your life having P.O.P STAR ™ quality vs POOP SKUNK ™ audacity.

PART 1: A Life that POPS Overpowers the Atmosphere with a Delectable Aroma While a Life that POOPS Stinks Up the Environment

Since my articles and advice ALWAYS evoke and empower positive, sweetly dripping (like honey from heaven), Godly suggestions and steps for DREAM LIFE LIVING, hence elevation from one’s mundane and unsatisfactory or dreary existence, I will start with the elements of a POOPY life and escalate and uplift our meditation to reviewing the succulent delectable morsels of a POPPING life. No one enjoys STINKING! (I know you are chuckling, so am I, LOL, but it is not a laughing matter, I am being very serious right now). If we are around someone or something that stinks, we remove ourselves expeditiously, right? Ofcourse we do. Or if it is “something” such as a trash can or a sink of dirty dishes or something old left in the refridgerator, we remove that item quickly, right? Yes! Well, the same applies to what one must do with a stinky (poopy) lifestyle: GET RID OF IT RIGHT AWAY! IT IS TRASH TO DISCARD THAT LIFESTYLE AND REPLACE IT WITH ONE THAT SMELLS DELECTABLE. How do you know if your life is stinking or poopy? I am glad you asked. Well, if you sit around complaining day in and day out about how “this” is wrong with your life or “that” is a mess or you often feel dismally unsatisfied, seeking constantly to fulfill your internal void with people or things or activities that are destructive to your soul’s escalation, then my dear brother or sister, your life possess a rancid stinch; in other words, it POOPS, it STINKS, it GIVES OFF A NAUSEATING SMELL…and I KNOW you don’t want that do you? If every relationship you have ever been in has left you feeling worse (drained), unappreciated, unloved, misused, or abused (mentally, emotionally, physically, or verbally), then you have succumbed to relationships that POOP and they have attached a terrible odor to your essence that others who may wish to be attracted to you can not repel because the smell is so bad! (I do not mean an actual physical odor; I am speaking methophorically and spiritually…there is such a thing as a spiritual odor that not even you can smell but it repels others from drawing near to you. So, that dream relationship or marriage you desire can not happen until you cleanse yourself of that poopy nasty stench from your life). How do you go about cleansing yourself of a poopy smell from your life? First, come into an authentic personal relationship with God through His son, Jesus Christ, if you want a life that is not foul-smelling but instead smells of peace, joy, and love from above. The word of the Lord says: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son, that whomsoever believes in Him shall have eternal life” (John 3:16 KJV). God never promised us that every day would be free from trials, in fact, He promises that we will suffer many trials in this lifetime, but they will make us stronger in HIM; He also promises that we shall have life that is rich and fulfilling if we come to know Him through His son Jesus Christ (see paragraph 1 above, John 10:10 is the scriptural reference). So what are you waiting for? Ask Jesus into your heart and life today and watch HIM turn that stinky lifestyle into one that shines bright for HIS FATHER GOD’S GLORY! Halleluia!

So, if one commits his/her heart mind and soul to Jesus Christ (not someone who mimicks or fakes the funk like they are committed to Christ), he/she has the chance at a life that sincerely POPS and smells delectable and so so good and does not REEK of a poopy smell! When we think of something that pops, we can envision flowers or even trees, because they POP out of the ground, out of RICH soil (flowers and trees can not GROW out of dry dirt; they must be planted in rich soil to grow accordingly, to grow will full vibrancy and height and strength and beauty). The rich soil I am referring to is a committed relationship with Jesus Christ as mentioned above; along with that is a strong and close fellowship with other likeminded individuals through a bible-based, anointed church community where one can immerse themselves in their God-ordained ministry and calling and can build in the knowledge and power of the Lord through bible study, sermons, Christian activities, praise and worship, and Godly empowerment. After this soil has been pierced and one plants his or her life in it, the next thing to do is read the word of God (bible) daily on our own (“Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the Word of Truth” II Timothy 2:15) and “pray without ceasing” (1 Thessolonians 5:17 KJV). We can go to “church” all we want, shouting and praising, serving in ministry and singing in the choir; however, if we come home and do not workship, praise, read the bible on our own, and pray without ceasing, our lives will still be poopy and stinky and that displeases God’s heart above anything: for us to be hypocrites of His teachings. The aroma that comes off of a life that POPS in Jesus Christ is so sweet and dizzingly delectable that it draws others to us vs. repeling them away when our lives are POOPY or stinky. Have you ever been around a nice smelling female or male? Perhaps it was their cologne/perfume or simply their hand lotion or even their phermones in their dna that come out their pores that drew you to them. Perhaps you even said “Excuse me but what are you wearing? You smell so good.” This is the same effect we can have on others when our lives smell of peace, joy, and love; when our lives are not stinking from negativity, discontentment, and dismal outlooks. Which do you desire? Do you wish for your life to stink or smell delectable? Choose today whom and what you will serve and what aroma you will produce. Choose to be positive and ask God to help you. Choose to throw out the trash in your house, your mind, your job, your mouth, your checkbook, your relationships, your friendships, your facebook page, your blog, your clothes, your spirit…throw out the trash so your life can pop with wonderful aromas and not stink to the high hills! Create your life through Christ in such a way that all those around you are drawn in by your delectable Godly and joyful and peaceful scent.

PART 2: A Life that POPS Leaves a Lingering Positive Effect on All Those Surrounding It While a Life that POOPS Leaves a Defiling Negative Effect on Any and Everyone to Whom It Attaches Itself

Again, let us get the negative stuff out the way. Someone who lives a stinky, negative, poopy life we shall call a “Poop Skunk” ™ LOL! (Yes I tend to laugh at my own terminologies, please get used to it or you shall get annoyed LOL). Wow, think for a moment about how FAR REACHING a skunk’s gut-wrenching odor is! That is the identical effect that a Poop Skunk has on his or her associates; and truly the only associates who choose to hang around a Poop Skunk are OTHER Poop Skunks! If you think I am lying, then please examine your closest circle of friends. If they are negative, low-living people who do not care to know let alone live their purpose in life, then chances are high that they are Poop Skunks and the reason you have never noticed it before is because they have so entrenched you in their skunkiness that you are now used to it; and even worse, YOU are now living that same Poop Skunk life and continuing this negative and debilitating lifestyle by projecting this negativity onto your other associates, and so on and so forth. It is just as far reaching an epidemic as is the opposite lifestyle: P.O.P STAR LIVING and we will cover that shortly. Okay, so how can you STOP this epidemic within your own life? It is not as easy as I am going to make it sound; and trust me I have had to do it too. In fact, it was and continues to be one of the most difficult things to do when you are trying to move in a positive direction in your life; however, it MUST be done if positive progress towards one’s dream life is to transpire. Here are 3 action steps you can start TODAY and continue for the next 21 days (3 weeks)–remember: it takes 21 days to form a habit. So, if you do not wish to be known as a Poop Skunk spreading stinky negativity on others through your lifestyle, do the following to start on a clean slate:

Step 1: Go to PART 1 of this article regarding the “scent” you leave in the atmosphere. READ this part of the article thoroughly; highlight parts if you must. It is imperative that you first examine the scent you are leaving when you enter an environment; this requires close reflection and gut-honest examination on your part. Then, to alter that sour or stinky scent to turn it into a pleasant one, follow the suggestions listed in that section of this article (i.e. Give your life completely to Christ not just in word but in deed; this is half the battle; He’ll illuminate your true calling and passion in life and give you peace, joy, and love unmatched by any other; then your entire scent will start to change for the better…again read PART 1 of this article and take full heed. Amen.)

Step 2: Since PART 1 suggests coming into a close relationship with Jesus Christ, let us presume you have now taken that step (halleluia! Congrats! Be sure to contact me, info below, and let me know so I can celebrate with you!). Next you need to replace the negative mind chatter you have succumbed to in your former poopy life with positive life affirming statements that will now cultivate an illuminating P.O.P STAR lifestyle! You can do this by writing down at least 5 negative former beliefs you have held about yourself and now replacing those with 5 directly opposing POSITIVE and AFFIRMATIVE statements about yourself. For instance: Replace “I am ugly” (negative) with “I am fearfully and wonderfully made” (positive; this is also scriptural…”I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made” Psalm 139:14). Say each of these 5 affirmations every morning before you get started on your day and every evening before you lay your head down to slumber; your mind is powerful and what goes in must come out! What you meditate upon your life will gravitate upon, either up or down, your choice!
